On June 23rd our Rotary exchange students, Soeren from Germany, Fabiana from Ecuador, and BamBam from Thailand went to Seward Elementary school in Auburn. They, along with Skaneateles exchange student Louis, from France, and Auburn HS student, Ming Lian, originally from China, created a Multicultural Fest for the K - 6th grade students. The event was part of the school's Activity Day of mostly outdoor events with each class representing a different country. It gave the students an opportunity to get firsthand information on countries they had been learning about. Our exchange students provided mini lessons on their country and language as well as food tastings to groups of students. The Multicultual Fest was organized by Rotarian Amy Tormey, who has taught ESL at Seward for many years. It was a very enjoyable day for all!
ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAMS …. and participants from Skaneateles
Each year, local Rotary districts and clubs worldwide arrange thousands of international exchanges for high school-aged students. The primary goal of the program is to foster world understanding by way of intercultural exchange. There are two principal types of exchanges:
LONG-TERM EXCHANGE PROGRAM:These exchanges usually last an academic year in the host country, during which the student lives with more than one host family (usually three families for three months at a time) and attends school.
Our Students this year are:
Inbound Students: Katariina Huru - Finland; Marcus Moraes - Brazil & Bartek Narwasinski - Poland
Outbound Students:Calvin Bohrer - Hungary; Jamie Roney - Denmark; Jake Viscomi - Japan &Ryan Terhune – India
SHORT TERM EXCHANGE PROGRAM (STEP):These vary from a few weeks to three months. They often take place when school is not in session and usually do not include an academic program. Short-term exchanges usually involve a homestay experience with a family in the host country, but also can be organized as international youth camps and tours that bring together students from many countries.
Our STEP Students this summer are:
Julia Hearn- Italy, host sister Guila; Adam Oliver- France, host brother Antonin and Allison Purdy- Austria, host sister Katharina
