Our prayers and condolences go out to Dolores and the May family in this time of their grief.

CAN YOU NAME THIS ROTARIAN ? - published in The Skantarian, Oct 6, 2011 - John May  I was born in Brooklyn near Jamaica Bay, where I developed a love of the ocean. Spent hot summer days on muscle beach in the Rockaways, a short hitch hike from home. Attended NY City schools and then the tuition free City College of NY, after which I finagled an assistantship at a large mid-western university. (CCNY that year won both the NIT and the NCAA basketball tournaments, the only school to ever do so) . I met my future wife at a Fraternity/Sorority party at CCNY. After my MS degree, I joined the famous research laboratory in Schenectady of a large corporation which had three Nobel Prize winners on its staff at the time. At work I received the Inventor of the Year award for my patents and scientific publications. Promotions to Pittsfield, Mass., Auburn and then Syracuse eventually brought me to Skaneateles. My past/present community activities in Skaneateles over the past forty years includes Boy Scouts (3 boys), a term as Village Trustee, an interest in lake preservation and other village/town quality of life concerns. Retirement provides me with ample time for golf/lake activities and do-it-yourself projects at home. Living in the village with lake access and a short walk to a fine inn for a great $12.00 meal and wonderful company is a blessing I really appreciate.
NEXT WEEK - Dec. 18th - Annual Club Christmas Party at the Sherwood, Inn.  Spouses and friends invited.  Cocktails with Cheese & Fruit Display in Main Dining Room at 6 pm. Diner: Patisserie Fresh Breads & Caesare Salad.  Entrées are: Chicken Marsala served with mashed potatoes & seasonal vegetables, Scrod Christopher served with rice pilaf & seasonal vegetables, Beef Sirloin served with mashed potatoes & seasonal vegetable, or Vegetarian - vegetable napoleon. Price is $25 per person.  Dessert: NY Style Cheesecake w/Raspberry Sauce.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BASKET DINNER/FUND RAISER  held last Thursday at the Skaneateles Country Club had a record crowd of 220 people attending the festivities. The Country club kitchen prepared delicious turkey dinners with all the trimmings. More than half of the attendees won gifts in the raffle. Kudos to Guido van der Ven & Peter Adams for chairing this year’s successful dinner.  They were ably assisted by committee members Peter Adams, Jack Hyatt, Guido Vander Ven, Steve Schwarz, Roy McDonald, Dave Piper, Jack Emmer, Dale Zabel, Bob Holloway, Charlie McElroy, John Moran, Robin Jowaisas, Bill Stevens and Duane Weaver Dinner Committee members expressed their gratitude to the many Skaneateles merchants & to our club members for the generous gifts they contributed to this year’s dinner.
The tally for this year’s Basket Donations was $10,330. The proceeds were split 40/40/10 to Skaneateles Outreach/Skaneateles Pantry/Spafford Pantry.  Congratulations to our Dinner Committee & to the many members of our club who pitched in to make this year’s dinner a great success. ... by Bill Conole

DICKENS ON CHRISTMAS - I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. ~Charles Dickens
